​Today, I’m excited to share a painting that holds a very special place in my heart. A modern, color-rich interpretation of Lord Ganesha.

​As the remover of obstacles and the lord of new beginnings, Ganesha is a beloved subject for many artists. But with this piece, I wanted to step away from traditional iconographic palettes and explore a sense of deep calm, warmth, and modern abstraction.

​The Concept: Serenity and Vibrant Contrast

​The core of this painting came from a desire to blend tranquility with energy. Instead of traditional warm tones for the deity himself, I chose a cool, serene shade of cerulean blue for Ganesha’s face and trunk. In color psychology and art, blue evokes peace, cosmic wisdom, and depth, qualities that resonate deeply with Ganesha’s role as the guide through life's complexities.

​To balance that cool, tranquil center, I built a rich, warm backdrop of earthy ochres, soft terracotta reds, and deep purples. The contrast creates a visual glow, making the blue face feel luminous and alive, as if radiating inner peace against a vibrant universe.

​Form and Composition: Soft Curves and Symbolism


​Rather than focusing on rigid, detailed realism, I leaned into stylized, rounded forms and fluid black outlines.

​The Abhaya Mudra: Raised in a universal sign of protection and blessing, the warm golden hand immediately reassures the viewer.

​The Sacred Modak: Held gently in the left hand, the modak symbolizes the sweet reward of spiritual seeking and wisdom.

​Curved Geometry: The stylized curl of the trunk, the crown, and the folded legs create a rhythmic flow of curves that guide your eyes around the canvas smoothly.

​The Artistic Process: Layering and Texture

​Working on this piece was a soothing, meditative experience. I began by blocking in the background with loose, watercolor-like washes of purple, rust, and gold to create an atmospheric texture. From there, I layered the solid shapes of the body, allowing the colors to bleed slightly at the edges to retain a soft, organic feel.

​The final touch was bold, smooth outlines that brought structure and definition to the soft color blocks, giving the artwork a contemporary, illustrative feel while preserving its sacred essence.

​Painting this Blue Ganesha was a reminder of how powerful color choice can be in altering the mood of a traditional subject. By bringing together cool tranquility and warm energy, this piece serves as a daily gentle reminder to stay grounded, serene, and open to new beginnings.
​Whether placed in a quiet meditation corner or a living room, I hope it brings a feeling of harmony and positive energy into your space.

Matsya Avatara

Painting Light – Bringing Matsya to Life Matsya - Manu One of the greatest joys of oil painting is watching light emerge layer by layer. This painting was never intended to rely on dramatic contrasts alone. I wanted the light to feel as though it originated from Matsya Himself, gently illuminating King Manu's face and hands. The warm glow across Manu's chest, neck, and chin was built using transparent glazes of  Quinacridone Sienna  (with  PO48 ), one of my favourite pigments. Its rich golden warmth has a depth that I have always found difficult to replace. Since this pigment is no longer manufactured, every painting that contains it feels a little more special to me. I'm glad that it became part of this one. The fish is the only true source of light in the painting. The Beginning of a Journey: Towards the Dashavatara

Around a year ago, I finished a painting of Narasimha. My daughter loved the depiction of His fiery rage and said to me, "Why don't you paint all the ten well-known avataras of Lord Vishnu?" I loved the idea, but I let it sit quietly in my mind for a long time. I began referring to books and studying traditional depictions of each avatara. Yet I knew I did not want to paint a human body with a fish's tail for Matsya, or dwell on the gory details of Narasimha slaying Hiranyakashipu. For some time now, this idea has been quietly growing within me. Lord Vishnu appears for a unique purpose. Each avatara is a response to a different crisis. Yet together, they tell one continuous story. The righteous are tormented by ungodly forces, the world loses its balance, and the Lord descends to restore dharma.
