Half-Face Portraiture: Capturing the Infinite in a Single Eye

When painting sacred figures, the conventional approach is to display the entire form. We want to show the full posture, the intricate jewelry, the surrounding landscape, and the complete facial expression to convey the magnitude of the infinite being. But sometimes, showing less actually reveals more.

In this oil study of Shri Krishna, I decided to break away from traditional framing. I wanted to experiment with a tight, asymmetrical, close-crop composition, slicing the face directly down the center to focus entirely on a single side bringing the composition to a more modern type of depiction with stylized form. 


The Power of the Half-Crop

When you cut a portrait in half, you immediately disrupt how the viewer interacts with the canvas. Instead of their eyes wandering across the entire face, they are forced to stop and look deeply into a concentrated space.


The Inward Gaze

By painting Krishna with his eye gently closed, the painting immediately takes on a meditative, serene quality. It feels private and calm. We aren’t looking at a dynamic story from the Puranas; we are looking at a snapshot of absolute, quiet inner peace.


The Single Focal Point

Because the color palette of the skin relies on cool, deep blues and a soft lavender background, the warmth of the naama on his forehead and the brilliant, iridescent turquoise of the single peacock feather become explosive focal points. They anchor the entire image.


Finding Balance in Asymmetry

Even though only half the face is present, the composition still feels entirely balanced. The heavy, dark mass of his hair on the right balances out the negative space on the left, and the single pearl earring grounds the lower half of the canvas.

This piece taught me that you don’t need a massive canvas or a crowded scene to evoke a strong spiritual or emotional mood. Sometimes, a single closed eye and a single feather are more than enough to capture the infinite.

Matsya Avatara

Painting Light – Bringing Matsya to Life Matsya - Manu One of the greatest joys of oil painting is watching light emerge layer by layer. This painting was never intended to rely on dramatic contrasts alone. I wanted the light to feel as though it originated from Matsya Himself, gently illuminating King Manu's face and hands. The warm glow across Manu's chest, neck, and chin was built using transparent glazes of  Quinacridone Sienna  (with  PO48 ), one of my favourite pigments. Its rich golden warmth has a depth that I have always found difficult to replace. Since this pigment is no longer manufactured, every painting that contains it feels a little more special to me. I'm glad that it became part of this one. The fish is the only true source of light in the painting. The Beginning of a Journey: Towards the Dashavatara

Around a year ago, I finished a painting of Narasimha. My daughter loved the depiction of His fiery rage and said to me, "Why don't you paint all the ten well-known avataras of Lord Vishnu?" I loved the idea, but I let it sit quietly in my mind for a long time. I began referring to books and studying traditional depictions of each avatara. Yet I knew I did not want to paint a human body with a fish's tail for Matsya, or dwell on the gory details of Narasimha slaying Hiranyakashipu. For some time now, this idea has been quietly growing within me. Lord Vishnu appears for a unique purpose. Each avatara is a response to a different crisis.
