Matsya Avatara - When the Divine Arrived as a Tiny Fish

Among the ten principal incarnations of Lord Vishnu, Matsya Avatara is the very first.

It begins not with a mighty battle or a grand miracle, but with an act of compassion.

One morning, King Manu was offering water, arghya, as part of his daily prayers when he noticed a tiny fish struggling in his cupped hands. The little fish pleaded for protection, explaining that larger fish would soon devour it if left in the river.

Manu looked at the fish affectionately and was overcome by protective spirit for the little fish that came to him for refuge. He then placed the fish in his kamandalu, a small pot. But by the very next day, the fish had outgrown it. So Manu moved it to a larger vessel. Soon that too became too small. He carried the fish to a pond, then to a lake, and eventually to the mighty ocean. Yet wherever it was placed, the fish continued to grow until it became vast beyond imagination.

It was then that Manu realised this was no ordinary fish. The fish revealed Himself as Lord Vishnu.

Vishnu warned Manu that a great deluge would soon engulf the world. He instructed Manu to build a great boat and gather within it the seven great sages, the Saptarishis, the seeds of every plant, and representatives of all living beings, so that life could begin anew after the flood.

When the waters finally rose, Manu's boat floated upon the endless ocean. Lord Vishnu appeared once more in His magnificent Matsya form, bearing a great horn upon His head. Manu tied the boat to that horn with the serpent Vasuki, and Matsya guided them safely through the water until the flood subsided.

Matsya avatara also recovered the sacred Vedas after they had been stolen and hidden in the depths by a demon, restoring divine knowledge to the world.

More than a story about a flood, Matsya Avatara reminds us that the Divine often arrives in the most unexpected forms. What first appeared to be a helpless little fish became the protector of all life.

Sometimes, the smallest act of kindness opens the door to the greatest revelations.

Painting Light – Bringing Matsya to Life Matsya - Manu One of the greatest joys of oil painting is watching light emerge layer by layer. This painting was never intended to rely on dramatic contrasts alone. I wanted the light to feel as though it originated from Matsya Himself, gently illuminating King Manu's face and hands. The warm glow across Manu's chest, neck, and chin was built using transparent glazes of  Quinacridone Sienna  (with  PO48 ), one of my favourite pigments. Its rich golden warmth has a depth that I have always found difficult to replace. Since this pigment is no longer manufactured, every painting that contains it feels a little more special to me. I'm glad that it became part of this one. The fish is the only true source of light in the painting. The Beginning of a Journey: Towards the Dashavatara

Around a year ago, I finished a painting of Narasimha. My daughter loved the depiction of His fiery rage and said to me, "Why don't you paint all the ten well-known avataras of Lord Vishnu?" I loved the idea, but I let it sit quietly in my mind for a long time. I began referring to books and studying traditional depictions of each avatara. Yet I knew I did not want to paint a human body with a fish's tail for Matsya, or dwell on the gory details of Narasimha slaying Hiranyakashipu. For some time now, this idea has been quietly growing within me. Lord Vishnu appears for a unique purpose. Each avatara is a response to a different crisis. Yet together, they tell one continuous story. The righteous are tormented by ungodly forces, the world loses its balance, and the Lord descends to restore dharma.
